Vermaelen might return to Premier League

Thomas Vermaelen has not enjoyed a great stint at Barcelona. He has had to deal with several injuries and apart from that, he has also not been able to get accustomed to Barcelona’s style properly.

It’s not that Vermaelen has had a complete horror run at Camp Nou. He has not established himself as a regular starter, but whenever he has got an opportunity as a back-up, he has been decent. But he hasn’t had as much success as he would have liked to. Continue reading Vermaelen might return to Premier League

BARCELONA TO TRADE ARDA TURAN FOR COUTINHO

Reports in Spain claim Barcelona are willing to let ArdaTuran join Liverpool this summer as the Catalan side remain desperate for the signature of Philippe Coutinho.

Barca have been linked with the player for long but the Reds are insistent on keeping the playmaker.

Barcelona, who are searching for new employers for Turan, want to use the former Atletico Madrid man as a deal sweetener to convince Anfield to release Coutinho to them. Turan joined in 2015 but he had to wait until the following year to have his debut due to a transfer ban.

The Turk faced a tough time initially but seemed to find his feet with time. His ball control and dribbling skills were not enough to immerse him in the team. He was a top attacking talent at Vicente Calderon but he has not been able to make his mark at the Nou Camp. Continue reading BARCELONA TO TRADE ARDA TURAN FOR COUTINHO

Crystal Palace plot move for Thomas Vermaelen

Crystal Palace manager Frank de Boer is prepared to offer an escape route to Thomas Vermaelen, who has had a miserable spell at Barcelona.

The Belgium international joined the Catalan giants from Arsenal back in the summer of 2014 and has since missed large spells of first-team football through injuries.

Vermaelen has been absent for 65 games in total over the past three seasons including 17 in a season-long loan with AS Roma last term. In spite of this, he has performed efficiently whenever on the playing field, and he has the desire to return to England during this summer’s transfer window.

According to The Sun, the Eagles could lodge a transfer attempt to sign the former Gunners centre-back with de Boer keen on adding more options in the central defensive department. Mamadou Sakho proved a huge hit during his short-term loan from Liverpool last season, but a permanent deal looks a long way off the cards with the Reds having placed a hefty £30m price tag. WATFORD WANT THOMAS VERMAELEN

Premier League side Watford FC are reportedly interested in landing injury ravaged player Thoma Vermaelen this summer.

Arsenal used to own the player and the Belgian spent five years at the Emirates before he moved to Barcelona in 2014. Barcelona inherited a player that has barely contributed anything meaningful despite paying £15 million for the move to the Nou Camp.

Watford had an underwhelming season but they seem to be planning a resurgence after a decent 2015/16 season. They want the 31-year old centre back to join their back line despite his long history with injuries.

Barcelona thought a change in league would do Vermaelen some good. They shipped the player off to AS Roma this season on a loan deal with the option of a permanent purchase. But Roma also barely enjoyed the player, so they passed up the offer to sign him permanently. He is set to return to Barca this summer as he is under contract until 2019. Is Vermaelen Still Capable of Holding Down a Spot in the National Team?

Thomas Vermaelen is an indisputable legend of the Belgium national team, putting in 58 appearances for the side since 2006. His versatility in the back four and ability to play as a centre-back or a full-back has always worked in his favour, but after a couple of disappointing seasons since leaving Arsenal, could the 31-year-old soon find his position in the Red Devils’ defence in jeopardy?

Since moving to Barcelona from North London at the end of the 2013-14 season, Vermaelen has struggled to recapture the imperious form he displayed during his tenure of 110 top flight games at the Emirates. As such, the European powerhouses sent the Belgian to Roma on loan for the 2016-17 campaign, deeming him surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp. What next for Thomas Vermaelen?

After an underwhelming loan season with AS Roma, Thomas Vermaelen is going to be heading back to Spanish side Barcelona come the end od the 2016/17 season, and no-one quite knows what the future holds for him.

On August 8 of 2016, Thomas Vermaelen decided to pen a 1 year long loan deal with AS Roma and the Italian club had the option of extending this deal further – but depending on whether or not Thomas Vermaelen performs at a consistently high level and was able to impress the head chiefs of AS Roma.

Unfortunately for the Belgian defender, instead of having an impressive season, it was more like a disappointing and mediocre season as Thomas Vermaelen missed out on 17 matches due to injuries which continue to hamper his playing career. Understandably, Roma chose not to extend the contract of Vermaelen and he is now expected to make a return to his parent club, Barcelona. Continue reading What next for Thomas Vermaelen?

Where can Thomas Vermaelen revive his career?

Thomas Vermaelen was expected to take his game to a whole new level when he left Arsenal for Barcelona in the summer of 2014 for £15 million, but things have gone horribly wrong for the defender. Injuries and fitness issues have massively affected the centre-back, who is now on loan at Italian club AS Roma.

Vermaelen has been able to play just nine league games for an AS Roma side who are set to finish in the top three of Serie A this season. When the 31-year-old centre-back has featured for the Giallorossi, his performances have been less than impressive.

Roma have the option to sign the former Arsenal centre-back on a permanent contract in the summer transfer window, but it is unlikely that the Italian club will pay money for a player they do not need. As for Barcelona, given the Belgium international’s injury issues and his age, the Spanish giants may not be too inclined to have him on their books for the 2017-18 campaign.
