WATFORD WANT THOMAS VERMAELEN

Premier League side Watford FC are reportedly interested in landing injury ravaged player Thoma Vermaelen this summer.

Arsenal used to own the player and the Belgian spent five years at the Emirates before he moved to Barcelona in 2014. Barcelona inherited a player that has barely contributed anything meaningful despite paying £15 million for the move to the Nou Camp.

Watford had an underwhelming season but they seem to be planning a resurgence after a decent 2015/16 season. They want the 31-year old centre back to join their back line despite his long history with injuries.

Barcelona thought a change in league would do Vermaelen some good. They shipped the player off to AS Roma this season on a loan deal with the option of a permanent purchase. But Roma also barely enjoyed the player, so they passed up the offer to sign him permanently. He is set to return to Barca this summer as he is under contract until 2019. Is Vermaelen Still Capable of Holding Down a Spot in the National Team?

Thomas Vermaelen is an indisputable legend of the Belgium national team, putting in 58 appearances for the side since 2006. His versatility in the back four and ability to play as a centre-back or a full-back has always worked in his favour, but after a couple of disappointing seasons since leaving Arsenal, could the 31-year-old soon find his position in the Red Devils’ defence in jeopardy?

Since moving to Barcelona from North London at the end of the 2013-14 season, Vermaelen has struggled to recapture the imperious form he displayed during his tenure of 110 top flight games at the Emirates. As such, the European powerhouses sent the Belgian to Roma on loan for the 2016-17 campaign, deeming him surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp. Where can Thomas Vermaelen revive his career?

Thomas Vermaelen was expected to take his game to a whole new level when he left Arsenal for Barcelona in the summer of 2014 for £15 million, but things have gone horribly wrong for the defender. Injuries and fitness issues have massively affected the centre-back, who is now on loan at Italian club AS Roma.

Vermaelen has been able to play just nine league games for an AS Roma side who are set to finish in the top three of Serie A this season. When the 31-year-old centre-back has featured for the Giallorossi, his performances have been less than impressive.

Roma have the option to sign the former Arsenal centre-back on a permanent contract in the summer transfer window, but it is unlikely that the Italian club will pay money for a player they do not need. As for Barcelona, given the Belgium international’s injury issues and his age, the Spanish giants may not be too inclined to have him on their books for the 2017-18 campaign. Vermaelen’s career has been hit hard by injuries over the last five years. When he moved at Arsenal as a highly talented player from Ajax back in 2009, Vermaelen was regarded as one of the best centre backs in the world. He became so influential in the Arsenal team that he was even made is the captain of the gunners just a few years after his arrival. However, things became especially poor for the player when he suffered his first major injury in the 2010-11 campaign.
